Developing an action plan for collaborative research on cultured meat and seafood safety: December 2024 working session
Outcomes from a working session with industry and academia stakeholders

Since 2020, the Cultured Meat Safety Initiative (CMSI) has sought to address the critical technical, methodological, and informational issues related to evaluating the safety of cultured meat and seafood (CM) products. This report outlines the outcomes of a working session held as part of an ongoing series to identify actionable steps for conducting collaborative and pre-competitive research on the safety of cultured meat and seafood.
The working session engaged 17 participants, with an even representation from academic and industry stakeholders, and was conducted under Chatham House Rule to promote open discussion.
Participants were presented with a list of research topics, which were outlined in collaboration with industry and governmental stakeholders and later updated to reflect the outcomes of a January 2024 working session.
After a brainstorming session to reflect and expand on the research topics, participants gave project pitches and voted on topic areas for further discussion in breakout groups. During breakout discussions, participants further developed the research topic, established actionable research plans, and identified potential challenges and resources needed, ultimately developing a preliminary roadmap to address each research topic.
This workshop was part of CMSI Phase III: Precompetitive Collaboration on Safety Research & Methods Development.
